Mapping the world

In this final project I will focus on a lesson plan to introduce European countries, a topic which is related to Social Sciences. The activity instructs the students in an original way as I have chosen to introduce this topic to the third graders of primary school with web 2.0 resources such as the creation of a comic, a video broadcast by them, and a digital mind map.
For this lesson, I have created a comic about Italy with Pixton and edited the strips to form a video. The students have to replicate the video with their character traveling to another European country and introducing some of its most important landmarks. They also have to record themselves reading the story. In this way, they increase their knowledge of European geography and improve their speaking, artistic and digital skills. I have also made a mind map with Mindmeister as an example students have to follow before making their videos. This ensures that students look for information about the European country they choose for their comics. This exercise helps them have a broader view of the world thanks to the research they have to carry out for their projects, and their listening of the presentations delivered by their classmates which extends their geographical knowledge and their appreciation of new cultures. Besides, they also improve their speaking skills with their recordings.






The activity of creating the comic will take up five class sessions and the research of the major landmarks of their chosen country and creation of a mind map will be part of students individual work at home. With regards to evaluating the activity, we will take into account their understanding of new information and their ability to adequately use the computer tools. In order to carry out this activity, the teacher and I keep a list of the countries the students select so that no country is repeated. We then help them to create the videos, guiding those who have more difficulties working with computers. We also provide the students with some reliable resources where they can find information for their mind maps and evaluate the individual work they have done. As a language assistant I help students to understand and value different cultures because I myself come from a different culture and therefore have a different view of the world than the one they might have.
